The widening wet soil moisture pattern during mid-spring increases the risk of suppressed anomalous heat risk across most of the wet soil moisture regions for upcoming summer. These areas include parts of the Northwest U.S., Mid-South and Midwest States and possibly the Carolinas. The catalyst to the wetter patter during May was an active Madden Julian oscillation typical of a climate pattern featuring a weak ENSO regime. Additional MJO activity causing more extreme rainfall is likely well into the warm season likely preventing emerging drought and favoring excessive wet weather events sustaining wet soils.
