Pictured: CWG/Storm Vista WX Models depiction of percentage of normal rainfall across Australia for days 1-5, 6-10 and 11-15.
The strongest MJO episode of 2017 in the equatorial West Pacific occurred earlier this month and lead to 2-8 in. of rain in Queensland. The wet phase of MJO has shifted east and the dry phase has arrived. This week most of Australia is rain-free. However, the short-term dryness is short-lived. Most models, including the GFS OP indicate areas of wet weather generate in western and eastern Australia in the 6-10 day period. The wetter regime is caused by the MJO returning to the Indian Ocean next week. More wet weather appears in the 11-15 day period in the west and Western Australia. The overnight models trend wetter for Australia versus yesterday’s week 2-4 forecast which emphasized wet weather in the East.
