The dry trend continued across during the period for the region except for the rainfall from Hurricane Harvey that fell in Texas, Louisiana, up the lower Mississippi River Valley, and into the Ohio River Valley. While rainfall is needed more for soybeans this time of year, either too much (e.g. across Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, western Tennessee, and western Kentucky) or too little fell (e.g. in all other states) compared to normal for the week of August 28 to September 3, 2017. Temperatures remained below normal across the region as well, on average around 5°F below normal for the period except in North Dakota, South Dakota, western Minnesota, western Nebraska, and Colorado. The prevailing cooler than normal temperatures this growing season across much of the Corn Belt except the Dakotas, Colorado, and western Nebraska brings concern that the needed growing degree days for crops to mature may come too late in the season for best harvests.
