During the medium-range Hurricane Irma is forecast as a major hurricane drifting into the western North Atlantic basin. Forecast trend is less at Florida/Gulf of Mexico and more toward the East Coast. Ahead of the approaching storm the East Coast is likely rainy due to a stalled frontal system. West of this event the Great Plains are dry and the western dry heat continues. Early in the 11-15 day period Irma may strike the East Coast intensifying rainfall. At that time the West and Central U.S. stay dry. Following Irma’s departure the dryness in the West and Central States widens eastward and is most focused on the Great Plains.
