As the recent cool pattern in the Central U.S. breaks down two areas of heavy rain are indicated in forecast models. One is across the Mid-South ad the other in the Midwest through the next 5 days. Heavy to possible severe thunderstorms are indicated. The drought-parched portion of Iowa is likely to see some of this rain. In the 6-10 day period the wet weather is mostly in the East while the national pattern trends warmer. A low confidence forecast indicates a persistent frontal boundary could focus heavy rains on Iowa into early next week. In the 11-15 day period the trend is drier in the Great Plains. The tropics could become more active after mid-August including a possible future for a vigorous tropical wave moving off the West Africa coastline today.
